Under the Middleborough Town Charter, the Fire Chief is considered a "strong chief". A strong chief may not be dismissed from his duty without cause and may choose without selectmen approval to hire a Deputy Fire Chief.

Also, when Chief Russell assumed the role of both Fire and Police Chief and the Deputy left, the salary monies of those two positions were used in part to fund three new fire fighters. The question will be, where in the budget will the salaries be paid from.

Obama beats McCain

President Elect Obama may have won the white house but in our little town of Middleborough, the majority of the 11,209 votes cast, supported Senator McCain. When looking at the voting throughout the state, you can see that Plymouth County is still the most conservative. Senator McCain carried many of the communities.

Looking nationally, you see that President Elect Obama, carried a small margin of the popular vote (52% to 46%). The electoral college may elect a president but popularity gives the boost to getting four more years. What happens in the first 100 days of his presidency should set the tone for what will happen over the next four years. Let us all hope for a better return on our investments but watch for rising taxes in order to pay down our deficit.

During a meeting of the Board of Selectmen (acting as the Board of Health), selectmen denied the lifting of an October cease and desist of activities at the former K & F brick factory on River Street.

Some terse comments were heard from all the members of the Board ranging from the owner, operating without permits to dust control and odors. Comments from the Health Agent, Jean Spaulding along with building inspector and conservation officer included a long list of alleged violations that need to be addressed.

The Owner of the property said that he is trying to get things cleaned up. That he is going to work things out and be a good neighbor.

A recent fire was a turning point for the neighbors who have stated that they have tried to be patient but cannot any longer. They demanded action.

The Board also ordered cease and desist on all business activities (even by others) except for the 21E work.

The property is currently in the clean up processes under MGL 21E and it is stated that about $1 Million of clean up has been completed thus far by the owner.

In the future, the owner would like to start a trash recycling facility. He told the the building inspector that his recycling program would not cause smells back in 2007.
